2010 Designated as "International Year of Dugong"
There are only about 10 to 20 dugongs left off the coast of Henoko in Ohura Bay, Okinawa. Dugongs are now believed to be an endangered species in Japan. In 2006, WWF Japan designated 2010 as "International Year of Dugong" .This year, it hopes to raise awareness about the plight of this graceful mammal.
Ohura Bay’s Rich Marine Ecosystem Under Threat
The vibrant biodiversity found in Ohura Bay, on the east coast of Okinawa, may be in danger. A proposal by the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station to build a new facility in the bay threatens this rich marine ecosystem. Colonies of blue coral were recently discovered in the bay, which is also the northernmost habitat for dugongs, an endangered sea mammal. Marine biologists have yet to conduct comprehensive research on biodiversity in the area, which is also home to 36 newly discovered species of crustaceans, such as prawns and crabs. The plan to build the new military facility, which would likely involve land reclamation activities in Ohura Bay, could lead to the destruction of the area’s precious marine biodiversity.
In 2008, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) 4th World Conservation Congress for the third time urged the Japanese and US governments to take steps to protect the natural habitat of the dugong in Ohura Bay. The United Nations also adopted a resolution to protect dugongs in Okinawa as part of the UN 2010 International Year of Biodiversity.
In 2010, WWF Japan hopes to raise global awareness about the plight of this majestic creature. The International Year of Dugong provides an opportunity to educate the world about the dangers facing Japan’s dugong population and appeal for the protection of the rich ecosystem in Ohura Bay.

New Logo Chosen for International Year of Dugong
WWF Japan recently asked several artists to submit original designs for an International Year of Dugong poster and logo. Four of these proposals were put up on the WWF Japan website and displayed at the Eco-Products 2009 exhibition in Tokyo, so the public could vote for their favorite designs. The logo featured below was chosen as the most popular design. Thank you to everyone who participated in the logo-selection process.
Kenji Fuji, the creator of the winning logo, said that his design, which features a female dugong and a calf, is based on the concept of "hope." Dugongs only give birth to one calf at a time, so it is important that humans help to save this species by protecting every single dugong calf that is born in the wild. We can offer "hope" to dugongs and ensure that we both have a future together by raising public awareness and taking action, Mr. Fuji said.
WWF Japan has created a new logo and web banner for the “International Year of Dugong,” available in both Japanese and English. Click on the banner to link to http://wwf.or.jp/dugong/.
Please feel free to download the banner to use on your own website and raise awareness about the plight of this unique marine mammal. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

About Dugongs
The dugong is a herbivorous marine mammal that lives in coastal tropical and subtropical waters throughout Southeast and South Asia, northern Australia and eastern Africa.
It mainly grazes on several types of seagrass, and was once mistaken for mermaids.
| Classification (Order and Family) | Sirenia, Dugonidae |
|---|---|
| Binomial Name | Dugong dugong |
| Size | Length: 3m, Weight: 450 kg |
| Longevity | More than 70 years (can be estimated by examining the annual rings of their teeth) |
| Reproduction | The dugong matures sexually between 6 and 17 years, and bears only one calf at a time. The gestation period ranges between 13 and 15 months. Due to its slow rate of reproduction (the rate is less than 5%), hunting must be limited to less than 2% of the total population in order to sustain the species. |
| Feeding | Although the dugong is heavily dependent on seagrass, it also consumes polychaetes, crustaceans and ascidians for additional nutrition. |
| Conservation Status | VU (Vulnerable) |
Characteristics
The dugong is able to breathe easily by raising its head slightly above the surface, as the nostrils are located on top of the snout. The edges of the mouth are covered with thick hairs that typically have a diameter of 2millimeters. These hairs help to draw seagrass into the mouth. The smooth, gray-colored skin is sparsely covered with short hair. The front flippers are paddle-shaped. The tips of the front flippers gradually harden over time because the dugong uses them to crawl along the sea bed. The dugong's fluked tail is similar to that of a whale. Dugongs can stay underwater for 6 to 7 minutes at a time before surfacing.
Natural Range of the Dugong
Although the exact population of the dugong is not known, approximately one hundred thousand are believed to remain throughout the world. Australia is home to the highest population of dugongs (approximately 100,000), while the rest live along the coastlines of more than 30 countries. Its range extends across the Indian and Pacific Oceans, particularly in coastal areas where seagrass is abundant. They tend to be solitary animals, although they sometimes congregate in large herds when females are nursing their calves.
Seagrass Beds
Seagrass beds along coastal wetlands are an important natural habitat for dugongs, because they provide an abundant food resource. Most species of seagrass complete their lifecycle within a few weeks. Dead vegetation accumulates on the sea bed and becomes rich, organic matter. Bacteria and other lower animals that make use of organic matter reproduce and become a food source for other organisms higher up the food chain. Seagrass beds are therefore highly productive ecosystems that provide an ideal habitat for a wide range of animals. Seagrass beds play an important role as nurseries for many juvenile fish and act as hatcheries for many commercially important types of fish.
Seagrass beds are also an important habitat for large mammals such as dugongs and manatees, as well as reptiles such as green sea turtles, which also feed on seagrass.
Dugongs in Okinawa, Japan
The northern limit of the dugong’s natural habitat extends to the islands of Okinawa, Japan. Nevertheless, there are now less than 50 dugongs around Okinawa (according to the Red Data Book of the Mammalogical Society of Japan) and the local population is in danger. Although they once thrived throughout the islands of Okinawa, the local population declined significantly after the 1960s.
Sirenians Throughout the World
The dugong belongs to the order Sirenia, which contains two families; Dugonidae (dugong) and Trichechidae (manatees). Dugongs and manatees are similar but differ in many respects. Dugongs live in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, whereas manatees are found in the Atlantic Ocean and the rivers that run into it. Dugongs strictly live in saltwater, but manatees live in both saltwater and freshwater. In addition, the natural habitat of the dugong and the manatee do not overlap.
Dugongs and manatees also differ in appearance. The tail is the most obvious physical difference between them. The dugong’s fluked tail is similar to that of a whale, while the manatee has a paddle-shaped tail.
Steller’s Sea Cow
Both dugongs and manatees are found in tropical and subtropical coastal waters. However, Steller’s sea cow, which grew up to 8 meters long and approximately 6 tons in weight, was once abundant in the area around the Aleutian Islands in the North Pacific Ocean. The Steller’s sea cow became extinct in the 18th century due to intensive hunting. The dugong is now the only remaining species of the family Dugonidae.
Dugong Art Contest
WWF has designated 2010 as the “International Year of Dugong”. The dugong is a marine mammal that lives in shallow, coastal waters throughout Southeast Asia, northern Australia and eastern Africa, although the northern limit of its habitat extends to Okinawa, Japan. However, the dugong population in southern Japan is under threat and these shy creatures face the possibility of local extinction.
Little is known about the dugong, so WWF Japan has organized an international competition for dugong-related artwork, as part of its efforts to raise awareness about the critical status of this unique species. Please feel free to submit your artwork in accordance with the contest rules, which are listed below. We look forward to receiving your application!

Enter the dugong art competition to win a prize! Winners will receive original WWF goods**. All participants will have their artwork displayed on the WWF Japan website.

The only way to attract their attention and bring them back is to stop making them suffer. I am very glad to have this opportunity to say that in order to stop the extinction of dugongs we must join our hands together and make a better living for the dugongs in the coming future. So treat them kindly, feed them well, care fore them and love them so that they will realize that you're treating them well and they will stop escaping.
